Part-time Courses
Do you, or someone you know need our program? Call 352-690 - 7323 to schedule a meeting. This meeting will include registration and a evaluation. Based on your personal needs and goals you will be paired with a volunteer tutor to work with one-on-one. Non-English speaking students will be offered a variety of small classes and locations to choose from. All tutoring sessions are held in predetermined public locations, that are convenient to both student and tutor
The ABE program helps adults learn to read. We provide tutors who work one-on-one with the student. The student/tutor pair meet at a predetermined public location and work at the students pace. Our tutors make sure all learning levels are accommodated and work toward the students personal goals. These may include learning to read, obtain a drivers license, registering to vote or filling out a job application.
The GED program prepares students for the general equivalency exam. Students are paired with a tutor who works with them at their pace in a predetermined public location that is convenient to both the student and the tutor. Students are evaluated upon registration and progress is checked periodically. Upon completion of curriculum, students are evaluated again to ensure success.
MCLC offers English classes to speakers of other languages (ESOL). We currently serve students from 20 countries who range in ability from basic literacy to advanced grammar and pronunciation.
Our classes are grouped according to ability and are scheduled throughout Marion County at various times of the day. Class size is limited so that students can receive individualized instruction.
The Marion County Literacy Council does not discriminate on the basis of sex, religion, race, color, national origin, disability, age, political beliefs, marital or familial status. Individuals with disabilities will be accommodated to the fullest extent as outlined in the ADA guidelines. Due to limitations of the volunteer based program, Marion County Literacy Council is unable to serve some individuals who are cognitively disabled or developmentally disabled. Recognizing this policy, there may be individuals who, however willing, are not able to benefit from Marion County Literacy Council tutoring. If in the opinion of the tutor or a staff person and with the concurrence of the Executive Director, such a situation exists, the student will be advised that tutoring or continuing in tutoring is not recommended. If possible, the individual will be referred to another appropriate agency better able to meet his or her needs.

- Mr. James
James is an intelligent, hard working father of three. He is a devoted family man and is very active in his Church. He has always stressed the importance of education to his kids, one whom even received a scholarship to trinity Catholic school and is now attending college on a football scholarship.
Yet, when James first came to the Marion County Literacy council in Jan of ’05 his own literacy skills were at a very basic level.
James’ hard work has paid off and his family is so very proud of him. He is now able to use computers in his workplace and approaches each day with more and more confidence. James continues his education with his new tutor.
