ABE - Adult Basic Education

ABE-Adult Basic Education

The ABE program helps adults learn to read. We provide tutors who work one-on-one with the student. The student/tutor pair meet at a predetermined public location and work at the students pace. Our tutors make sure all learning levels are accommodated and work toward the students personal goals. These may include learning to read, obtain a drivers license, registering to vote or filling out a job application.

GED - General Equivalency Diploma

GED Preparation

The GED program prepares students for the general equivalency exam. Students are paired with a tutor who works with them at their pace in a predetermined public location that is convenient to both the student and the tutor. Students are evaluated upon registration and progress is checked periodically. Upon completion of curriculum, students are evaluated again to ensure success.

ESOL - English For Speakers of Other Languages

ESOL - English Speakers of Other Languages

MCLC offers English classes to speakers of other languages (ESOL) at no cost to the student. We currently serve students from 14 countries who range in ability from basic literacy to advanced grammar and pronunciation.

Our classes are grouped according to ability and are scheduled throughout Marion County at various times of the day. Class size is limited so that students can receive individualized instruction.

How To Become A Student

How to Become A Tutor

Do you, or someone you know, need our program? Call Jessica @ 352-690-7323 to schedule a meeting. This meeting will include registration and evaluation. Based on your personal needs and goals you will be paired with a volunteer tutor to work with one-on-one. Non-English speaking students will be offered a variety of small classes and locations to choose from. All tutoring sessions are held in pre-determined public locations, that are convenient to both student and tutor.

Anyone looking for an opportunity to do something worthwhile can get in touch with the MCLC. Changing lives one word at a time, is what the MCLC does each day. Volunteers teach adult students to improve their reading skills and speaking English skills. The smiles of gratitude touch a tutor's heart as a student progresses. Learning to improve life's situations by reading a street sign, a menu, a job description or instructions from a pharmacy are some of the goals you can help reach. Please donate your time to improve a life in Marion County.
